Evaluation activity 6

Below is a list of the different technologies that we used to enable us to create the final product, the two minute opening to our film. We used various websites and various pieces of equipment to ensure that our film opening reaches a good quality.

Camera: This was by far the most important aspect to our film, we used the Nikon D5000 camera as we knew it is a DSLR, therefore it is of high quality. This camera was very easy to use and provided us with film of good quality. The only minor difficulty with the camera was the fact that it did not allow us to use a deep focus effect which we had initially planned on doing by filming the Christmas lights.

Tripod: The tripod was another element in our filming, this was because without the tripod our shots would have been quite shaky. The tripod also allowed us to use a smooth tracking shot for the shot of our main character crossing the road and the shot of her leaving the station. This really helped to make the quality of the filming higher.

Recording studio: We decided to record our monologue at a professional recording studio to ensure that the sound is of good quality. Using a set of headphones and a microphone, Lauren read the monologue for us and it was recorded and sent to us through email. We were very keen on the idea of recording at a recording studio seeing as our opening will not include any dialog, we really needed to make sure that the monologue sound is good to ensure that the audience do not get bored  and to make the film appear more interesting.

Adobe premier elements: We used Adobe Premiere elements 10 to edit our film. This program offered a variety of different effects, transitions and other useful tools to make our film more interesting to watch and to improve the quality of it. In general we found it very easy to use, however when rendering our video it would only render half of it, therefore when uploading our final video onto Youtube only half of it would be uploaded. However we tried to render it again and it luckily worked.

Blogger: We used this website, blogger, to blog about our whole filming process from our research of different film genres to our evaluation tasks. It has allowed us to put together a story of everything we have done throughout the course and to show our progression and setbacks. It has been a very handy program which is very easy to use.

Evaluation Activity 8

Targets for next year:

Timing: One of my personal improvements is timing. From our initial ideas it was decided that we were to start filming during the run up to Christmas to make sure that the streets are festive enough for our production. As a result of various commitments my partner and our actor were not free at all during the run up to Christmas, therefore this meant that we had to film in early January. The Christmas lights still remained in the town centre however to our annoyance they were not actually switched on. We had to therefore shoot whatever Christmas lights still remained, we found some especially in the little alleys and in shop windows. Next year if I have any ideas such as this one regarding the Christmas lights, I will make sure that my group and I film earlier to ensure that we won't have any issues such as this one. In terms of our mise- en- scene I believe we ought to have used more props. It was suggested in the audience response task video that we use a cardboard sign which homeless people use to beg for money, in hindsight we should have definitely done this idea as it is very effective.

Sound: From looking back at my preliminary task, I have become aware that sound especially is a very important feature in a film. In the preliminary task we did not use any soundtrack and our dialog was very limited. I believe we improved the sound greatly from our preliminary task to our final piece because we recorded our monologue. When listening back to the monologue combined in the opening with the soundtrack, I have noticed that the the monologue does not smoothly enter in time with the music. Next time, for the trailer, I will make sure that I make sure the timings for the monologue and music are much more precise.

Shots: We have learnt more about camera shots and how to use them in the correct way. In our preliminary task we used for example a high angle shot to show two people having a discussion. In our final piece we used a high angle shot to show our main character sitting against a brick wall on her own, this is effective as it makes her appear vulnerable to the audience. There was no proper meaning for the high angle shot we used in our preliminary task so therefore it was not effective. In our preliminary task we also used a over the shoulder shot which in this case was to indicate the audience that a heated discussion is about to occur. We used a similar shot type, a tracking shot, however in this case the point of it was to put the audience in our main characters position and give them an idea of what it is really like to be completely on your own. I also think that think I could have been more imaginative with my camera shots as I feel as though the shots I used were fairly basic shots. I also feel as though I should have used more exciting transitions to make the opening more exciting.

Editing: In our preliminary task our use of editing was not of a good quality. The use of transitions was very limited and most of them did not fit well with the shots and looked a bit random. In our final piece however we used transitions that fitted allot better with the types of shots we used. We used the fade transition at the beginning of our film to show the scene of our main character sitting on the train. With the transition combined with the narration "This is my story..." this makes it clear that the main character is telling a story of a past experience and the fade to white effect enhances a vision of a flashback.

Mise- en- scene: In terms of our mise- en- scene I believe we ought to have used more props. It was suggested in the audience response task video that we use a cardboard sign which homeless people use to beg for money, in hindsight we should have definitely done this idea as it is very effective. Next year I would also set myself the target of improving the lighting, the shop of the coffee shot was just too dark and did not clearly show our main character buying the coffee and the audience may find the shot misleading as they may not even be aware that she is in a coffee shop.

Evaluation Activity 3

For the directors commentary I created a script for myself to read from and recorded my voice. I made sure that I answered all of the questions required and added my own findings.

Evaluation Activity 5

The Desperate Pursuit opening with annotations: For this task I added annotations so my film opening to show the shots we used that were inspired by films or TV programs we had watched.

1) This is the establishing shot of a festive high street in L.A. in the opening scene of 'The Holiday' which we were aiming to recreate. The shot would have been perfect for our film as it shows a busy high street during the run up to Christmas. The Christmas lights are very bright and festive and there are plenty of cars on the road, therefore it conforms to the shot we initially wanted to create.

2) We were inspired by the quote which is used in the opening of 'The Boy In The Striped Pajamas.' This quote was placed here to obviously get the audience thinking for when they watch the film, the quote is eerie and reminds the audience that thousands of children were killed as a result of the holocaust. We wanted to create a similar effect however our story line is not as powerful as the story line of The Boy In The Striped Pajamas. We decided too open our film with the definition of Hope. We believe this makes the audience think of all the luxury things they have in their life however when they see the definition of hope, it reminds them that for some people hope is all they have got.

3) For the introduction of our film title, we were inspired by the way the title for the film 'The Holiday' appears. We liked the simple font and choice of colour and also the basic transition between the two scenes so therefore this inspired us to use a simple font for out own title.

4) This shot is a shot from the TV program 'Life Unexpected.' The shot shows a young woman waiting at a set of traffic lights. We were inspired by this shot to use in our own film as it shows a busy crowed, this shot is exactly what we wanted to recreate when shooting our own film.

5) This mid shot is very similar to the tracking shot we used to film out main character walking up the high street. We decided that the tracking shot effectively gives the character the main focus and helps to make the audience aware of their situation by seeing things from their perspective.

Audience response task

For this task I had to discuss the result of the filming with other groups in my class and film the discussion between us. Unfortunately my partner was absent on the day of the discussion, therefore I had to speak on behalf of her. To start off the task I showed my film opening to the two groups through Youtube. After watching it they were set various questions to ask me and I would try to answer them in good detail however as it was a discussion, some of the questions I was asked were not on the list of set questions.

Question 1: "How have you adhered to the genre of your film opening?" I don't believe I handled this question as well as I could have simple because I did not give the best examples when referring to films that also open with monologues I accidentally stated that Forrest Gump and Titanic open with monologues. I meant that they both open with quite simple music to convey the focus of Drama films being on ordinary people and their stories. The examples which I should have given that I have talked about in other pieces of work include The Holiday, My Sisters Keeper and The Blind Side. The monologues used in these films are effective in conveying the character's state of mind and to introduce them.

Question 2: "What did you think was effective about camera composition and what could have been improved?" I think I handled this question better than the last one because mentioned both the key shots, the over the shoulder shot and the high angle shot. I explained that the over the shoulder shot is effective in putting the audience into her position and see what the world looks like from her perspective being lonely. I mentioned the high angle shot makes her look vulnerable, and with the main character living on the streets this also helps to convey her feelings.

Question 3: "What do you think was effective about the editing and the titles and what could you have improved on?" The groups did not get the chance to see the completed film opening with titles due to my partners absence. The second piece which had better titles was not uploaded onto Youtube which meant that it was saved onto her computer. I had to show the groups the original piece. I mentioned that I should have used more of a variety of to make transitions between different scenes more interesting to watch.

Question 4: "What do you think about the narrative structure of the film?" I struggled to answer this question however I mentioned that most Drama films open with monologues. Monologues are effective in introducing the main character, I could have also mentioned that our Drama film is focused on just one individual, this is common in other drama films including 'Forrest Gump.'

Question 5: "What do you think was good about the use of mise-en-scene and what could you have improved on?" I mentioned that we did not use enough props, we only really used for props a sleeping bag and coffee cup. One of the group members mentioned that we could have used a cardboard sign that most homeless people holdup to make members of the public sympathize with them and give them money. We had various issues involving the lighting, our shot through the coffee shop window did not clearly show our main character buying the coffee which may have caused confusion with the audience if they did not realize that, that particular shot was taken inside a coffee shop.

Question 6: "Do you think this production is conventional?" I answered that I think it is, however after watching the opening several times again I do not think it is conventional. The film is quite unusual in comparison to various block busters where mainly Action and Horror films dominate the box office. Our film is most likely to be similar to 'The Kings Speech' in terms of budget and this film started out only opening in four cinemas in the USA, however as a result of it's popularity it soon opened in more than a thousand. This popularity was because of the cultural heritage theme in the film, I believe our film will only reach a small audience due to the unusual story line.

Film Production Mark

The mark you received at moderation for the Film Production is a Level 4 - 48/60.

Targets: edit and shorten 'the hope' frame, it is on the screen for too long.

Include titles throughout the film: titles for the actresses, editor, producer, director (the last name featured at the end of the two minutes.)

Evaluation Activity 4

Evaluation Activity 2

Our main character (who's name is not yet revealed, later in the film her name is revealed to a person she trusts) is similar in many senses to Callie from TV drama 'The Fosters.' In terms of appearance they both look very similar, they both seem to make the best out of their appearance regardless of their situation. As shown from their facial expressions they both appear to be troubled however our main character's expression of concern portrays her vulnerability. She appears to be scared and alone however Callie doesn't appear to be feeling vulnerable or scared but seems to be confident but alone, most likely from pushing others away from her. Our main character appears to be more mature than Callie. Although at times she cannot control her temper she can however adapt herself well to different situations, as she is doing  so by going on a journey to find her real parents. Callie on the other hand has been moved from foster home to foster home often so therefore she isn't very good at adapting herself to different situations and has a firary temper that she can't control. In terms of location the surroundings are fairly similar, both locations the characters seem to be on the streets. People would associate this with homelessness, Callie is homeless in a very different sense to our character. She is taken on by a foster family so therefore she has somewhere to live but her unsettlement in the film suggests that the place she  lives is not somewhere she can call home as she does not fit in with the family.

Evaluation Activity 1

For our first shot we used an establishing shot to give the audience a clear view of the location of our film being a humble town centre (Guildford, Surrey.) We chose to film our opening initially in the Christmas holidays when we knew there would be plenty of busy Christmas shoppers. However due to work commitments not everyone was free at the same time, therefore we had to film at the start of January. However the fact that not many people are there at this time is quite effective because it would only contribute more to making the main character feel lonely. You can see a few Christmas lights however we did not get the street Christmas lights which hang from building to building like we wanted. However this shot is effective because this establishing shot allows the whole street to be shown. Cars and people are in this shot which makes the location feel more like a drama film because if we used an isolated location the film would conform more to a horror film. Everyday people are presented going about their everyday lives which conforms to typical features of drama films. They are wearing coats which are typical winter clothes showing the season we chose to set our film in. We trimmed this shot to be three seconds, our second establishing shot was slightly longer at four seconds. This sets up the storyline of our film of a foster child who is searching for her parents. This shot represents how her parents could be any one of these people shown in the shot and she wouldn't even know.

Our next chosen shot is another establishing shot which was the next shot used in our film opening. This shot effectively shows Christmas lights which is important as our monologue opens with 'Every year I see these Christmas lights...' Therefore it was vital for us to get a shot of the Christmas lights. The monologue really helps to make the audience aware to the genre being drama because most drama films tell the story of everyday people and the openings use monologues. This is evident in the drama films Forrest Gump, The Blind Side and My Sister's Keeper. This shot shows the surroundings to be quite isolated. This shot would not have worked if no one was in this shot and the Christmas lights were not up, this shot would have looked like a typical shot that would appear in a horror film. Luckily a pedestrian walked past at the time whilst filming so therefore it does not look too isolated but it emphasises how lonely the main character is. This shot is slightly low angle, this is to give a clear view of the Christmas lights and to make the surroundings look bigger and more intimidating. This is to represent the fear of the young girl on her search to find her parents.

For our film title we decided on a simple beige font with a black background. The title appears when there is a pause in the monologue, this is effective in emphasising the title. We most recently watched the film 'The holiday' and the title for this drama film also appears in the bottom left hand corner, the monologue for this film also pauses when the title appears also so we feel as though we were really influenced by it.

The next shot is a mid shot showing the girl on the train. This shot introduces our un named main character who is played by our friend Lauren. When this shot occurs the monologue starts up again after the pause to show the film title, The Desperate Pursuit. The line from the monologue that plays along with the shot of the main character on the train is 'This is my story...' The fact that she is on the train is suggestive of the fact that she is going to show you, as an audience, her journey to find her parents. By using this shot type it gives the audience an insight into what it is really like to be on your own. Audiences will be able to relate to times when using public transport on your own you tend to feel lonely however you have somewhere to go to, we want to audience to symphasise with the girl and make them realise that she really has no one and she is not on her way home to be with her family. The mid shot allows the audience to get a good view of every features of the girl. They will be able to see her face so they can see her expression of longing as well as what she is wearing. We want to allow them to be able to have an insight into the characters situation by what she is wearing. A mid shot is also a perfect shot type for as well as revealing the character of focus it also reveals the surroundings.

The next shot is an over the shoulder shot of the girl exiting the train. We found that the surroundings are quite deserted for a station, we were expectation more people to exit the trains. This is not however an issue for us because not many people around will make the main character feel lonely because she will know that even though some of the people may be on their own, they have the advantage over her of having a home to go to.
Our camera work for this shot is effective as it allows the audience to see things from the main character's perspective, they can therefore get an idea of our main character's emotions and how lonely she must feel. When exiting the train the man shown to be leaving at the same time as Lauren told her to get our of the way so he can get off the train. Very professionally Lauren did this whilst still in character. The man was wearing a hat and a thick coat so this contributes to make the season the film was shot in clear to the audience.

The next shot shows the main character walking away from the station. At this time there were allot of people leaving the station, we waited for a group of people to exit the station so that Lauren could walk away from the station behind them. We were particular about our main character being behind the group of people to show how she feels as though she is just a forgotten member of society. At this point it was around 4 o'clock in the afternoon and light was fading fast. We decided to just film her leaving the station behind the next people who leave. We used a long shot/ tracking shot to follow her path from the station to her nearing the road.

The next shot is a mid shot/ tracking shot of our main character walking along the street holding her coffee. The light has faded in this shot however the artificial light from the shops create the perfect lighting for our shot whilst still making it look natural. At this point Guildford was not very busy, however we still had a good amount of people in the background of our shots. We managed to capture a moment by chance when a Mother walked past with her two children, a young boy and a young girl. Lauren naturally glanced over at the family which conformed precisely to our main characters feelings of longing to have her real family. The tracking shot captures Lauren's back along with the line of the monologue '...probably not.' This was very effective as it makes it seem as though our main character is metaphorically turning her back on the idea that she will ever find her parents.

This mid shot shot shows our main character leaning against a wall showing her spot for where she will sleep that night. She is in a sheltered archway so therefore the audience will notice that she has been quite clever in her choice for where she will sleep because it is sheltered, therefore she will feel protected. The surroundings are quite dark, this helps to convey our main characters emotion and how lonely she must feel. We used a high angle shot to show that she is vulnerable because she is sleeping rough. This conforms to typical stereotypes of females being quite vulnerable, however arguably our main character is quite headstrong as she has ran away from home, therefore she must feel strong enough to do this.

The next shot is a close up shot of our main character drinking coffee. We chose this shot because we wanted to try and capture the steam coming out of the coffee to emphasise to the audience how cold the weather is, therefore they can symphasise with her. The wind also blows slightly through her hair, this makes the surroundings feel unpleasant, therefore this will make the audience appreciate that they live in a warm and comfortable home.

The Desperate Pursuit final

Final title

Our final choice on the title of our film is the one above. The font is called papyrus and we made the first letter of each word bold. This, to us makes it stand out more. The colour we chose was sort of a dirty white. We chose this because it is very simple, and it will stand out over the top of the scene we want to play it over. We like this title because it is simple yet effective. The font type is very gentle but also quite mysterious, linking very well to our film.

Practise titles- Presentation of the title

Our next test for our titles is to decide how to present our title. We tested out the bold, the italic and the normal versions and these were our ideas. The top three are the normal fonts without italic, but different thicknesses, and the bottom three are all italic and different thicknesses. We found that the fully bold titles were just too much. But at the same time, the ones without bold werent bold enough. To change this, we deicided to make the first letter of each word bold, like we initially wanted. We think that the second from the bottom is the perfect font and thickness for our film.

Practise titles with colour

We tested out lots of different colours for our chosen font, overall these were the ones that we liked the most. We wanted the colour to be simple but stand out at the same time. All of these colours are really neutral and they really reflect our film perfectly. The white versions we liked at first but looking at them more, we decided that they were maybe too bland, and not very eye catching. The grey version really doesnt stand out very well so we dont want to include that in our film.
The version we chose overall was the third from the top. We decided to use this because as soon as you look at the picture, thats the image that jumps out at you. We want our title to really be seen, and as it will be appearing over the top of our actual film we need to to stand out over different colours.
Our next job is to test the thickness and size etc. of our font. Our initial ideas are to make the first letter of each word bold, but we are going to play around and see what we like and what stand out.

Updated shot types

In general each shot went the way we planned for it to go however we have made a few changes to how we want each shot to appear. However we had various issues with timing which affected how each shot went. For example two of us weren't free leading up to christmas, therefore this meant that we had to film after christmas. We needed to have christmas lights in the background of our midshots and for our establishing shots. We had an issue with the christmas lights from building to building, these were the main Christmas lights in the streets and this is what Lauren will reffer to in the monologue with the first line being 'Every year I see these Chrtistmas lights...' We needed these lights for our establishing shot, we found that they were still up however when it got dark they were not switched on. This made us reconsider our shots, we decided to film several shots of any other Christmas lights we could find, these shots would be short and would feature at the start of the film. We also decided to only do one shot of Lauren walking up the street, this was because it was getting dark very quickly so therefore we wanted to make sure that we had enough time to film all of the other shots. Another change was the shallow focus effect we had planned to use to film the Christmas lights, we attempted to create this effect but unfortunately the camera would not focus. The Christmas lights were not on in the streets so we decided to bot use this shot because it would  it be effective.

Practise titles

For out first attempt with titles we tested out various different texts to use on our film title, 'The Desperate Pursuit.' We both agreed that Papyrus is our favourite because it different to the usual texts such as Arial but it also looks good which is important for us. We decided on a plain white text with the first letters of each word in capitals so make the text stand out more. The font looks as though it has cracks in it which is effective as it could represent her rough life of being in care and running away. We were influenced by the opening to the film 'The holiday' as the title appears in the left hand corner of the screen through a slide transition in a simple white text. We want to create a similar title appearance in our film. The Papyrus font stands out in comparison to the other fonts, we made sure we named them so we would not forget the name of the one we liked the most.

Animatic storyboard

We created out animatic storyboard using Adobe premiare elements 10. I sketched each individual shot, Molly then wrote the descriptions of what music and dialog we want in each shot and also how long we want each shot to last. We found creating the storyboard fairly easy, all we really needed to do was cut down the length of each shot to be the exact length of time we need it to be for the real shots we will use when editing. Creating the storyboard is handy for reffering back to when we need to edit our film as it shows the length of each shot, therefore when editing we can cut down each shot to the length of time we need. The whole animatic storyboard lasts for , we kept our storyboard within the time limit required for the whole film. We managed this task efficiently so therefore we can now start out editing as we have a completed animatic storyboard to reffer back to.

New software choice

Using Sony Vegas Pro 11 we had decided to practice rendering the very little editing we had done just to make sure that we did not edit our whole film. We wanted to make sure that we would not spent allot of time editing our film then at the final hurdle discover that the film would not render. We soon discovered that the film would not  in fact render, this was very dissapointing as we were both very excited to use Sony Vegas to make our film opening a much better quality. However this did make us feel as though it was a brilliant idea that we practised rendering the film, so therefore we have not lost allot of time due to editing our film. We have haven't really started the editing yet but for our editing we will be using Adobe Premiare Elements 10. We had a few issues using this programme when editing our preliminary task because we found that it would not let us save the work, therefore after spending allot of time editing we were forced to exit the unsaved work. I have researched into this issue and have found a very helpful video on youtube that will show me how to save the work using the updated programme, Adobe Premiare Elements 11.

Video diary 1- After filming comments

After we had completed the filming for our 2 minute opening Molly and I both decided to create some questions that I will be asked in the form of a video interview to represent our thoughts on the filming. My partner Molly filmed me and asked me the questions that we wanted to be answered. We created the questions together to make sure we could show the examiner our understanding of how well our filming went and what did not go entirely to plan. I found this fairly easy to answer the questions allowing every question to be answered in good detail and to express everything we wanted to make clear. We decided to do this instead of writing the interview because we agreed that this will be far more interesting for the examiner to see than an interview in the form of a transcript, this we felt would be boring. We also wanted the examiner to be able to see who we are, we felt it is important to use a video diary as it is first hand. For all we know if we used a transcript the examiner may think that we have copied a transcript from another blog. Also we want our emotions to be displayed, this cannot be done in a transcript. This interview was genuinely quite formal however when mentioning what we think of the filming process you could clearly see that I was happy with the filming.
